Talks at GS: General Motors CEO Mary Barra on Crisis, Culture and the Future of Cars

by

Mary Barra has reshaped the culture of General Motors since becoming chairman and CEO in 2014, starting with her direct approach to the company’s massive ignition switch recall that year, and followed by sweeping changes in product development and technology that have made GM a leader in automotive innovation. “We don’t have a right to exist,” she told Goldman Sachs Chairman and CEO Lloyd Blankfein during a recent episode of Talks at GS. “We have to earn our right to be General Motors and to be able to have the privilege to build cars, trucks and crossovers and other transportation services by doing a great job and earning customers. And so really, that’s the transformation that we’ve made.” Barra also discussed the future of electric vehicles and autonomous driving — an idea that she says will become a reality at GM in a “ride sharing environment” as soon as next year.
